4 zebras escape on I-90 near North Bend

Several zebras got loose on I-90 Sunday, and Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers are working to corral the elusive animals.

NORTH BEND, Wash. - Authorities in King County continue to search for a zebra that escaped a trailer in North Bend near I-90 on Sunday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol (WSP) said four zebras being transported out of state escaped at around 1 p.m. Sunday when the driver stopped to secure the trailer along eastbound I-90.

Three of the zebras have been captured, but one is still loose, according to the WSP.

Drivers stopped along the roadway to try to corral the loose zebras before they took off onto private property.

"I called someone and was like, ‘I found the missing zebras! They’re in my yard,’" said Whitney Blomquist.

Blomquist shared video with FOX 13 showing three of the four zebras walking onto her property Sunday.

"It was wild," she said. "I’ve seen bears before but never zebras. This was a first!"

She said two of the three eventually made it to a private horse farm just down the road before being corralled.

"I’m just glad they’re safe," she said.

FOX 13 spoke with the wrangler who helped get them into a trailer.

"I never caught a wild zebra before," said wrangler David Danton.

Danton said he was traveling through the area, and given his skills, decided to stop and help.

"It’s just what you do," he said. "Neighbors helping neighbors. I was just quiet and gentle and just took the path of least resistance. They gently walked up and got in the trailer and they’re fine so it ended well."

The third zebra, believed to be a baby, was found in another neighbor's yard.

"We just all worked together to keep it in the yard," said Courtney Luther. "It was very skittish and kind of back up into a tree but eventually someone came with a trailer and was able to reunite it with the others."

King County Animal Control is still looking for the fourth zebra. Anyone with information is asked to give them a call.
