Troopers investigate deadly crash involving pickup truck, semi on I-5 near JBLM

Troopers are investigating a deadly crash involving a pickup truck and semi-truck on I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McCord on Wednesday morning.

Trooper Robert Reyer said the crash happened before 7:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-5 at milepost 120.

Reyer told FOX 13 News that the semi was parked in the right shoulder lane when the pickup truck in the far left lane drove across all lanes and struck the back of the semi’s trailer.

Investigators said the pickup struck another vehicle after hitting the trailer.

The driver of the pickup died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

By 10:30 a.m., Reyer said only the right lane remained blocked on I-5 south as crews removed debris from the road. The backup stretched for miles.

The investigation remains ongoing.
