Dump truck hits pedestrian, cars before crashing into Subway restaurant in Pioneer Square

SEATTLE -- A dump truck lost control in Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood Monday morning, hitting a pedestrian and three cars before barreling through a Subway restaurant on Yesler Way.

Seattle Fire says four people were injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center, one of them in serious condition.

According to Seattle Police, it all started at about 9:30 a.m. when the dump truck "suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure" and began rolling uncontrollably at the intersection of James Street and 2nd Avenue.

That's where the dump truck struck a pedestrian, who was hospitalized in stable condition.

The driver reportedly tried to steer the truck through traffic, but struck three vehicles in the 100 block of James Street before crashing into the Subway. A 25-year-old woman who was driving one of those vehicles was hospitalized in serious condition, officials said.

A 51-year-old man standing outside the Subway and a 44-year-old man inside the restaurant were hospitalized in stable condition, officials said.



A witness said she saw the dump truck speeding down James Street going at least 40 mph. She said people were screaming, and she watched someone get hit right in front of her office building.

The entire multi-story building that houses the restaurant was evacuated because of structural damage.  James Street was closed between 1st and 4th Avenues while crews cleaned up and police investigated.
