Child dies from flu in Kitsap County, her family says

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A 12-year-old girl in Kitsap County died from the flu earlier this month, her mother said on Wednesday.

The Kitsap County Health District could not release specific details of the case, but said the child had not received the flu shot.

They received the report this week, but the child died earlier sometime between Jan. 3-9.

"Until last week, Kitsap County had seen very minimal influenza activity. However, preliminary data now show that Kitsap County is seeing an increase in influenza – predominantly influenza B, but some influenza A is also circulating. Last week, the Washington State Department of Health also reported that flu was beginning to increase."

The health district says this is the second flu death of the season -- an adult died in November.

According to the Washington State Department of Health, there have been eight lab-confirmed influenza deaths in the state this season.
