Town flooded with littering calls after adding new fee

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) _ An Oregon county has seen a 65 percent increase in littering calls since implementing a $3-per-can fee for trash disposal at the dump.


















The News-Review reports that the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has responded to 71 litter-related calls since July 1, up from 43 calls during the same time period in 2014.

Piles of trash have been accumulating in forests and woodlands across the county. Timber Deputy Rick Held says people will dump five or six garbage bags at a time and animals will have strewn the trash everywhere within a few days.

Douglas County Commissioner Chris Boice says the county anticipated an increase in illegal dumping, so they built some money into the landfill budget for work crews to supervise illegal dump sites.
