Three people thrown into water when sailboat capsizes during race; 1 still missing
THURSTON COUNTY -- Three people went into the water Saturday night when their boat capsized during a sailboat race in the Budd Inlet, north of Olympia.
Rescue teams from Thurston County Sheriff's Office and the U. S. Coast Guard responded to 9-1-1 calls for help around 4:30 p.m.
Two of the sailors were quickly rescued from the water by other boaters in the race, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office. However, a third person couldn't make it out of the water and into another boat because of the 8 to 10-foot waves.
Officials said the man was wearing a Coast Guard approved life vest at the time.
A helicopter searched the area until nightfall when the search was called off. Officials said the Coast Guard's 45-foot patrol boat stayed in the area all night.
Crews said they resumed the search at 8:00 a.m. Sunday with three boats from the Thurston County Sheriff's Office Dive Team and the Coast Guard.
