Thousands of dollars in bikes, equipment stolen at popular BMX track

SUMNER, Wash.  --  Who would steal from kids? That's the question a local community wants answered after thieves stole thousands of dollars in crucial equipment used to run a popular BMX track.

For 15-year-old Marcus Hutko, biking is everything. His home away from home is the River Valley BMX Park in Sumner. Right now, he would normally be on his bike,  but Marcus can't ride here anymore. In fact, no one can.

Ken Carroll says someone broke into the sheds Tuesday and stole thousands of dollars in bikes and equipment.

"They got the spare compressors, the current compressor, the holding tank, that's like a thousand dollars. The ram, the cadence box, probably another $1,500 in stuff. All in all, about $6,000 worth," said Carroll.

The owners say they filed a police report with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, but, without the equipment or the money to replace it, the season could be over.

"I'm pretty disappointed, I was really looking forward to the rest of the season," said Marcus.

Marucs says he's not calling the race just yet. He's hopeful the thief will have a change of heart.

"It means the world to me honestly. I've been around it for so long, I wouldn't know what to do without it."

"We're not going to quit. BMX is a family in the Northwest, it's big. We've got some of the best riders in the country right here, so we are not going to quit," says Carroll.
