Snohomish County plans new park on Stillaguamish River

DARRINGTON, Wash. (AP) _ Snohomish County is planning a new park near the Stillaguamish River thanks to property from an old county family.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2diLouY ) that Snohomish County purchased the 33-acres of land from the Curtis family in September for $310,000. The Curtis family had previously owned the property for 90 years.

Jeff Curtis, of Snoqualmie, says his family started looking to preserve the forest land about 10 years ago.

The acreage includes a forest that hasn't been logged since the 1950s and a stretch of the North Fork Stillaguamish River that cuts through the northern part of the property. The property will act as a buffer around the Whitehorse trail, which runs from Darrington to Arlington.
