Search for missing person after airplane crashes off Bainbridge Island

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. -- A woman is in critical condition and a 70-year-old man is missing after a small airplane crashed and sank into Puget Sound, according to the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest.

The Coast Guard first notified the public about the crash on Twitter just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officials said a good Samaritan pulled the injured woman, possibly in her 60s, from the water, and she was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Allen Kenitzer with the FAA Office of Communications said the crashed aircraft is reportedly a two-seat, single engine Cessna 150. No details on the effort to recover the plane have been released.

Kenitzer said the circumstances behind the crash are still unknown at this time.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will now carry out an investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
