Reward offered for information into police station shooting in Bonney Lake

BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- A police station riddled with bullets has a neighborhood on edge.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is looking for the gunman who opened fire on their office on 214th Avenue in Bonney Lake.

Detective Ed Troyer said five bullets were shot into the building late Saturday night while two deputies were inside working at the time.

“I heard something that sounded like pop,” said neighbor Diane Metzger.

She and her husband, Tim, live right next door to the police station.

“You could throw a stone there,” said Tim.

But it wasn’t rocks being thrown last Saturday night. Just before 10:30 p.m. deputies said someone walked into the station parking lot and fired 5 bullets into the building.

Bullets ripped through a window and then lodged into the opposite wall. The gunfire passed right next to a workstation but the bullets missed the two deputies working inside.

“It was lucky there were no deputies in that office because usually there could be a couple people actively working in that office,” Troyer said.

“Who in the world in our community or outside comes in and obviously is shooting a gun to possibly kill someone,” asked Diane.

“That’s exactly what it was,” said Tim. “They were shooting to hurt somebody.”

Investigators believe the shooter likely parked a car nearby and then walked into the parking lot before opening fire. They also believe the shooter knew deputies were working inside because several patrol units were parked out back.

The shooting has the Metzgers worried for their own safety.

“We want to get our concealed weapons permit because we’re scared,” said Tim. “We don’t want anything like that happening here. We want to protect ourselves.”

Crime stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in this case. The number is 1-800-222-TIPS.
