Report: Santa Clara police union threatens to boycott 49ers games over Kaepernick protest

SAN FRANCISCO -- The union representing police officers who work San Francisco 49ers home games has penned a letter saying some officers may choose not to work at Levi's Stadium unless the team takes action against Colin Kapernick, NBC Bay Area reports.

According to the Bay Area news station, some union members are upset over Kaepernick's well-publicized decision to sit during the national anthem. Kaepernick sat in protest during the national anthem for a preseason game, saying he would not honor a song nor “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Most recently, Kaepernick kneeled instead of sitting at Thursday's game against the San Diego Chargers.

The letter penned by the Santa Clara Police Officer's Association said the union "has a duty to protect its members and work to make all of their working environments free of harassing behavior."

It says that if the team "fails to take action to stop this type of inappropriate behavior it could result in police officers choosing not to work at your facilities."

About 70 Santa Clara police officers work home games at the stadium, NBC Bay Area reports.

NBC Bay Area reportedly has not yet heard from the Santa Clara Police Department following a request for comment.

The 49ers have previously stated that they stand behind Kaepernick's choice to express his individual freedoms.
