PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A Port Orchard man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for kidnapping his girlfriend and shooting at responding deputies.

The Kitsap Sun reports (http://goo.gl/eAZPF4 ) James C. Mathes was sentenced Friday after being convicted on numerous assault and other charges in the Dec. 31, 2013 incident.

Mathes pointed a pistol at his girlfriend that night and drove around with her before stopping at his mother's house. Kitsap County deputies arrived at the house and Mathes went outside and started shooting. Deputies shot Mathes three times.

Mathes told a psychologist he had been sober for eight years before the incident but had relapsed and was convinced people were plotting against him.

He apologized in court for how the events affected deputies, their families, his family and everyone else impacted by his actions.
