Police officer, deputy rescue woman trapped in sinking car

YELM -- Two law enforcement officers worked together to rescue a woman from a car that was sinking into a canal near Yelm.

The driver called 9-1-1 around 2:30 Sunday morning and told dispatchers that she skidded on ice on Highway 507. She said her car had slid into a canal, was filling with water and she was trapped.

The car was partially submerged when Deputy Brett Campbell and Yelm Police Officer Taylor arrived at the scene.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Campbell held onto Officer Taylor while he broke the back window with his baton. The 30-year-old driver crawled out the back window and onto the trunk as the car slid all the way into the canal. The officers grabbed the woman and pulled her to safety just as she started to slide into the water.

She was taken to St. Peter Hospital for minor injuries.

Authorities notified Centralia Electric Hydro and they planned to remove the car later in the day.
