Passenger killed in rollover crash after driver flees cops, Milton police say

MILTON, Wash. -- A passenger died after she was ejected from a car that was fleeing police early Sunday morning, according to investigators, and the driver who survived could face charges.

Milton Police Sgt. Nils Luckman said when an officer tried to stop a vehicle around 5 a.m. Sunday, the driver crossed into the other lane and fled. The car, which was driving at a "high-rate of speed," left the road and rolled near the intersection of Porter Way and Fife Way.

Firefighters said the passenger, was ejected from the car and was found 80 feet from where the car stopped.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the passenger as Christine Pedro, a 34-year old woman from Tacoma

They said it took about 30 minutes for them to lift the car using struts and airbags to rescue the driver who was pinned inside.

Medics transported both to a nearby hospital.

The female passenger was pronounced dead in the emergency room. The male driver was still in surgery Sunday afternoon, police said.

Luckman said the driver could be charged with vehicular homicide.

The name of the suspect driver has not been released.
