One killed, one critical in SoDo after driver flees from police, strikes semi head-on

SEATTLE -- One person has died and another is in critical condition after a driver fleeing from police collided head-on with a semi in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood.

According to Seattle PD, at about 7 a.m. Tuesday, a patrol officer tried to pull over a Mercedes SUV for a traffic infraction in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue South. The Mercedes sped off, drove through a red light and rear-ended a parked vehicle.

The officer didn't chase the Mercedes, but did broadcast the suspect's vehicle description.

Police say a few minutes later, the Mercedes was still speeding on Airport Way South when it struck a semi traveling northbound on South Hinds Street head-on. There were two people inside the SUV. One died and the other is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Airport Way South was shut down in both directions as detectives processed the scene.
