SEATTLE -- Police say officers shot and killed a man after he broke into a home, stole a car and fired at cops.
Seattle police say an officer was involved in a shooting near Ravenna Park early Monday morning. No officers are injured, but investigators say the suspect passed away. Police shut down part of NE 55th Street near University Village for the investigation, and drivers should try to avoid the area if possible.
Seattle police say someone called 911 to report a car prowl near Bryant Elementary School. Police detective Mark Jamieson says an officer chased the suspect - who turned and started shooting. One officer fired back, but the suspect got away.
Investigators later got a call about a home break-in, several blocks away on 28th Avenue NE. When officers caught up with the suspect again, he allegedly tried to drive away and crashed.
"As officers were going up to effect the arrest, that's when the shots were fired," Jamieson told reporters. He says a total of two officers fired at the suspect; one after the alleged car burglary, and the other after the crash. The suspect died of his injuries.
Police have not released the suspect's name. The Seattle Police Department Force Investigation Team is working to gather more information.
