Officials investigate drowning in Green River Gorge park

King County sheriff’s detectives were investigating a drowning near the Green River Gorge State Park on Tuesday evening.

The county’s marine unit responded to the 29500 block of Southeast Green River Gorge Road near Black Diamond, the sheriff’s office tweeted around 7:10 p.m. The victim, a man who officials say was in his 20s, died at the scene, according to the Seattle Times.

This year has been particularly deadly in the region’s waterways, and officials are pointing to coronavirus-related closures, which have shut down public pools and and prompted more people to go boating, as a possible reason for the increase in people swimming in lakes and rivers.

In Seattle, the Fire Department has responded to 56 water rescues, and in King County, there have been 16 drownings since mid-May.

No further information about the Tuesday incident was immediately available.
