Mother, baby safe after birth begins on I-5 near Seattle; traffic delayed

SEATTLE -- A mother and baby are safe and sound at a local hospital Friday morning after the mother began to give birth in a car on the freeway; causing a few morning traffic delays.

Washington State Department of Transportation tweeted around 6:45 a.m. that an "incident" was blocking the north and southbound off-ramp of I-5 at Mercer Street. Officials quickly learned a woman was giving birth in her car.

Road crews quickly got the mother off the off ramp and cleared traffic.

A short time later, the mother successfully delivered the baby at a local hospital, WSDOT tweeted. The father was in happy spirits, he said.

Of course, this isn't the first time a baby has been delivered on I-5.
