Man who killed teen while trying to steal belt gets 19 years

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A young man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for killing a 17-year-old boy while trying to rob him of his belt in a Portland park last year.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports 20-year-old Kole Jones pleaded guilty last week to manslaughter and attempted robbery. He also pleaded guilty to robbery from a different incident in 2016. He was sentenced Monday.

Jones was part of a group of three teens arrested in the Holladay Park killing of Shawn Scott Jr. as they tried to force him at gunpoint to hand over his brown-checkered Louis Vuitton belt.

Scott died after being shot in the head by Jones. Scott was a junior at a Vancouver, Washington, high school where he lived.

Jones declined to say anything in court. Joe Calhoun, his attorney, said Jones never intended to shoot Scott and is sorry he killed him.
