Man hit, killed by Amtrak train in Thurston County

TENINO, Wash. -- A 41-year-old man was struck and killed Friday afternoon by an Amtrak passenger train near Tenino, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office said.

The rail line was shut down for about two hours.

The sheriff's office said an investigation revealed that the passenger train was traveling about 60 mph southbound when the man stepped out from between two rail cars that were stopped on a parallel track. The man stepped onto the track, and the Amtrak engineer was unable to brake in time.

The identity of the man was not immediately released. Officials said they believe he may have been a transient.
