Man dies after falling through ice while skating with grandson

RAINIER, Wash. -- A 78-year-old grandfather has died of his injuries, after falling through an ice pond at a ranch near Yelm.

The Thurston County Sheriff's Office said the man was skating on the ice with his grandson, when he fell through, into 6 to 8 feet of frigid water.

First responders were unable to get to him, until a Thurston County deputy retrieved his dive team gear and pulled him out.

Paramedics could not find a pulse, and the man was not breathing. He was taken to St. Peter hospital in critical condition.

Deputies said he succumbed to his injuries on the way there.

The grandson is not injured.

Firefighters ask everyone to stay off all outdoor ice, because the risks of it breaking are too severe.
