Mail carrier accused of stealing mailed coupons

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Gresham police say they have arrested a longtime postal worker on suspicion of stealing coupons that were mailed to residents.

The Oregonian reports (http://goo.gl/O3udDy ) that 62-year-old Kathleen Benting was arrested Wednesday and released from the Multnomah County Detention Center. She faces charges of identity theft and mail theft.

Police say Benting would pretend to be the resident listed on a piece of mail and use the coupons for herself at different stores and tobacco companies.

Police started investigating when employees at a department store reported that someone was using a lot of coupons.

Police say Benting has been with the postal service for 26 years.
