SEATTLE -- May Day in Seattle began with posters promising violence, spray painted threats and even a police effigy set ablaze.

By late evening at least seven arrested had been made after activists marched the streets for hours and sporadically clashing with police and bystanders.

Area anarchists had been promising for weeks on underground blogs and social media accounts that mayhem would come on May the first in Seattle as it has in previous years.

Police were able to retain control of the situation most of the time and only limited vandalism and damage was reported.

'It's time to break them before they break us," proclaimed posters plastered across Capitol Hill Thursday morning.  At least one death threat aimed at Seattle Police officers was found spray painted on a utility box and Seattle Police tweeted a photo of a threat they said they had received which showed a effigy of an officer in flames.

Police also fund the words "Kill SPD" spray painted on a bank at 13th Avenue and E. Madison Street early Thursday. Other locations were tagged with similar spray paint Thursday.
