I-5 reopens in both directions following 'disastrous' crash in Tacoma

UPDATE: Washington DOT says all lanes have reopened on I-5.

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- Washington State Troopers are investigating a nine-vehicle crash with injuries on northbound I-5 near State Route 16.

Troopers say a semi-truck traveling south on I-5 struck was involved in a collision with another vehicle and the center barrier around 11:30 p.m., leaving the semi with a punctured diesel tank.

The barrier was pushed into the northbound lanes, causing a multiple vehicle crash with serious injuries.

There were seven vehicles and two semis involved in the crash, and there are six people in the hospital with varying degrees of injury, troopers said. One of the crash victims is in ICU.

Impairment is not suspected, and no criminal charges are expected at this time.

I-5 North was fully blocked for six and a half hours, according to Washington State Patrol.
