Humane Society seeks help with 36 pets recovered from Kitsap County home

SILVERDALE, Wash. -- The Kitsap Humane Society is seeking volunteers and donations to help treat 36 pets -- 26 small dogs among them -- that were recovered from a house in Chico described as squalid, with no light or ventilation.

The Kitsap Sun reports that the homeowner lives in another county and told authorities they visit the house every other day to care for the animals.

But reports indicate the pets were suffering from extreme neglect. The animals showed symptoms of skin and dental disease. Many are fearful of humans. None had to be euthanized.

Kitsap County Animal Control Supervisor Chase Connolly said when authorities first went to the house Tuesday, conditions were the worst he'd ever seen.

In addition to the 26 small breed dogs, authorities rescued five rabbits, four cats and a guinea pig.
