Grandmother jumps on car's hood to try to stop man from stealing her vehicle

SEATTLE -- A woman being carjacked Monday in north  Seattle jumped on the hood of her car to try to stop the man from taking it, but was thrown off and injured as he drove away, witnesses said.

Witnesses called 911 at about 3 p.m., saying a suspect had just carjacked a woman near North 44th Street and Woodland Park Ave North, Seattle police said.

Witnesses said a man approached the woman, who was sitting in her car, and began what looked like a conversation with her. But then the man yanked the woman out of the car and got into the vehicle, witnesses said.

The woman got up and jumped on the hood of her car, holding onto the windshield wipers, witness Clark Morgan said, in an attempt to stop the man from taking her Nissan Altima, but he drove off and she fell from the hood to the ground when he turned a corner.

As officers poured into the area, they located the suspect driving the victim’s car. Officers began pursuing the suspect, who rammed two different patrol cars during the chase, police said.

The suspect crashed his car at 68th and Dayton in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood and was taken into custody by officers. Witnesses were brought to the crash scene and verified the arrested man was the carjacker, police said.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
