SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle is bringing streetcar service to the First Hill neighborhood.
Rides on the 2.5 mile route will be free for a few weeks until an official grand opening.
The $135 million project, funded by a Sound Transit sales tax and car-tab tax, was approved as part of a 2008 regional ballot measure.
It was devised as an alternative to an underground light-rail stop, which the agency judged to be too expensive and risky.
Seattle also has streetcar service in the South Lake Union area.
