Fire rips through Whidbey Island leaving family homeless

OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A family is without a home on Whidbey Island after it went up in flames. Neighbors are now rallying support to help a grandmother, her daughter and grandson.

Walking us through what’s left of her Whidbey Island home isn’t easy for Donna Moore.

“I’m literally devastated, all my memories are gone,” said Moore.

This grandmother and mother says all this went a fire ripped through her house Friday, taking everything she owned, including her beloved dogs.

“The dogs perished in the backroom trying to flee,” said Moore. “I have lost two of my best friends. It’s heartbreaking.”

To make matters worse, Donna’s daughter and 5-year old grandson Nathan were staying with her at the time, and now they’ve lost everything too.

Neighbor and friend Roderick and Jessica Balos have provided what they can after witnessing the fire firsthand, but they won’t be able to do it alone and is now asking for help from the community.

“The grandson especially needs school uniform clothing, shoes, just the basics and things,” said Jessica Balos.

Not only will the Moores need clothes and basic necessities but eventually a new home.

While the family says fire investigators don’t yet know what caused the fire, they do believe it started here in the electrical panel.
