PORT ORCHARD, Washington -- A home exploded into a ball of fire in South Kitsap early Tuesday morning.

Residents across Kitsap County were rocked out of bed by the explosion in the 35-hundred block of Soholt Lane in Port Orchard just after 4:00am.

“We can confirm an explosion at a residential structure that leveled the building,” wrote South Kitsap Fire and Rescue officials on Facebook. “Fire has been contained at this time. Cause is still unknown and under investigation by the KC Fire Marshal.”

Witnesses told Q13 News the explosion may have blown windows out of nearby Mullenix Ridge Elementary School.

“It was loud and percussive and shook the house,” wrote Kyran Riley on the Q13 News Facebook page. “I thought at first someone was pounding at my back wall with a sledge hammer.”

Residents across Kitsap County reported hear and feeling the explosion. Even folks living as far away as Renton reported hear it.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s office was urging residents to avoid the area which is off Ramiller Road.

It is unknown what caused the explosion. It is also unknown at this point whether anyone was inside the home at the time of the explosion.
