Could these 36 questions really make you fall in love with a stranger?

NEW YORK, New York – Can the right series of 36 questions asked in the right order really have you falling in love with a complete stranger?

That’s the premise of an article trending on the New York Times website this week.

To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This” is the title of the essay by Mandy Len Catron.

In the story Catron replays the first date she had with a man she casually met at the gym and had quietly followed on Instagram.

But this was the first time we had hung out one-on-one.

“Actually, psychologists have tried making people fall in love,” I said, remembering Dr. Aron’s study. “It’s fascinating. I’ve always wanted to try.

In the column Catron then runs through their experience with the 36 questions Dr Aron writes about.

We spent the next two hours passing my iPhone across the table, alternately posing each question.

They began innocuously: “Would you like to be famous? In what way?” And “When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?”

But they quickly became probing.

And that is the point.  As the questions get more intimate so does the relationship between the strangers.

So did it work for Catron?  If you don’t want us to spoil the ending of the essay, you should stop reading this article now and go read the whole New York Times essay here.

If you are still reading you want to know the answer.

Here’s how Catron concluded her column:

You’re probably wondering if he and I fell in love. Well, we did. Although it’s hard to credit the study entirely (it may have happened anyway), the study did give us a way into a relationship that feels deliberate. We spent weeks in the intimate space we created that night, waiting to see what it could become.

Love didn’t happen to us. We’re in love because we each made the choice to be.
