Beaverton man arrested during vacation in Dominican Republic

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ A Beaverton man is stranded in the Dominican Republic after authorities accused him of striking a motorcyclist with a rental car.

The Oregonian reports ( ) that Dominican Republican officials have taken John Ekman's passport as they investigate a traffic accident on Nov. 8.

Ekman's sister, Janeen Sollman, says Ekman and Lori Breeden were taking a trip to the grocery store when her brother didn't see a motorcycle lying in the roadway. The rental car he was driving hit the motorcycle, deploying the airbag's.

Witneses say a truck had previously hit the motorcycle and fled the scene, leaving the motorcyclist dead alongside the road.

Ekman was arrested and accused of killing the motorcyclist.

Sollman says he is working with the American embassy and a local attorney.
