Baby Jesus stolen from Washington Capitol nativity

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — State officials say baby Jesus is missing from the nativity scene outside the Washington state Capitol.

The Olympian reports the sponsor of the Christmas holiday display replaced the figure with a baby doll bought at a thrift store.

Ton Wesselius does not understand why someone would take the Jesus figure from the nativity display.

The Tumwater resident believes the figure was stolen last weekend. It's the third time since he began building his outdoor display on the Capitol grounds that the Jesus figure was stolen.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins says the Jesus case is being treated as a theft, and charges could be brought if someone is identified.
