AWW: New orca born to L-Pod, 2015 'baby boom' continues

SEATTLE — The Center for Whale Research says a seventh calf in 12 months was born into the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population.

The group says the calf was first spotted Nov. 10 from West Seattle. Researchers used photographs to confirm Friday that the calf was new. It was born to L pod and will be designated L123.

L123's birth brings the total number of Southern Resident orcas to 84, across three pods.

The Center for Whale Research says the birth of a calf is cause to celebrate but it's important to remember that the calf adds another mouth to feed for the struggling population.
