Pedestrian hit and killed by off-duty Auburn officer identified
SEATTLE - Authorities say an off-duty Auburn police officer was arrested for vehicular homicide after a pedestrian was killed Saturday night in Seattle.
According to the Seattle Police Department, 33-year-old Auburn officer Michael Smith is accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian with his car in the Interbay neighborhood.
Officers were called to reports of a car hitting a pedestrian near 15th Ave W and Gilman Dr W late Saturday night. When police arrived, they found a man dead in the road as well as the driver, who pulled over and stayed at the scene.
An investigation revealed the man driving had passed another car just south of Gilman Drive, but lost control of his car and went onto the sidewalk, hitting and killing the pedestrian, later identified by the King County Medical Examiner's Office as 65-year-old Clifford Jones.
KCMEO said Jones died of multiple blunt force injuries.
Officers arrested the driver for investigation of vehicular homicide and suspected DUI.
Smith posted $200,000 bail and was released from jail on Monday night.
Auburn Police said Smith was placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
