17-year-old Kittitas student shoots himself in chest, walks to school to seek aid, police say

A 17-year-old Kittitas Secondary School student left school Thursdsay morning, shot himself in the chest at his grandfather's house and then walked back to the school to seek aid, the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said.

The boy was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was reported to be in stable condition, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said the boy, who was upset over a girl, left school at about 9 a.m., went to his grandfather's house, got a gun out of a safe, shot himself, put the gun back in the safe and walked to school, where he told officials he had been shot.

The school and nearby elementary school were placed on lockdown when authorities thought there might be a gunman on the loose. After the students in each school were accounted for, they were released for the day.
