Three Family Members Presumed Dead In Eastern Washington Fire
SEATTLE - It's a tragic Christmas for a family from eastern washington -- afer two young children and their grandmother died in an apartment fire.

The fire broke out Tuesday at an old schoolhouse converted into an apartment building in Curlew, Washington, about 75 miles northwest of Spokane.

The children's mother -- Amanda Ryken -- is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, burned over 60 percent of her body.

Investigators suspect human remains found in the building yesterday -- are Ryken's two-year-old and four-year-old daughters and her mother.

Ryken's husband, John Ryken separated from her last January. He learned the devastating news when a sister-in-law called him in Spokane.

"It's Christmas Eve. My kids should be getting ready for bed and waiting for Santa Claus," he said. "But right now the only thing keeping me going is the fact that my wife is still alive. She may be in bad shape, but she's still alive."

About 30 others burned out of their homes still have not been able to return to the building.

If you'd like to make a donation to the children's family -- a fund has been set up at Washington Trust Bank.
