Community Gathers To Watch Memorial
PIERCE COUNTY - About 20,000 packed the Tacoma Dome to honor the fallen officers. With the venue full, many people went to overflow locations and watched on television monitors.

Although they were watching it on TV, many still felt the same sadness. Ana Landskov is the daughter of a Lakewood Police Administrator "it feels like we did lose a little bit of the family."

Landskov and her sister, Emma Jeffries, planned to head to the Tacoma Dome to support their mother but still hoped to send their support by going to Pacific Lutheran University. Jeffries said they wanted to be with their mom but felt like going to PLU helped send the message. "Supporting from a distance still means something to them" Jeffries said.

The crowd at PLU watched in solemn respect. When those in the Tacoma Dome stood, people there stood, too. Some saluted; others placed their hand over their heart.

The respect they showed was an equally touching tribute to police and firefighters who watched here. Sgt. Robert Snaza from the Lewis County Sheriff's Office said "it just makes us stronger because it shows what we're out there to do and it's to be supportive of the community and we're there to help."

Clover Park Technical College and several local churches hosted events, as well. At Clover Park people signed a condolence card "they are missed already, they will be missed forever" ASB Vice President Jennifer Justice said.

At the Tacoma Champion Centre Bobbie Arndt was touched by the service "we're praying for them we love them so much." Pastor Mike Patterson said many came because they wanted to feel a sense of community. "I think we hope for better days than the darks we've experienced in the last week or so" Patterson said.

At some of the viewing locations people sold t-shirts and gathered money for the memorial fund. Stephanie Michelson talked with her husband who was selling shirts at the Tacoma Dome "it's very intense and very emotional." Michelson said she talked with officers who came from other states for the memorial "It makes you proud too because of all the unity of everyone coming out."
