Lakewood - Some can't help but wonder if a war on cops is unfolding in Washington.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page online, 107 police officers have been killed in the line of duty this year, 38 from gunfire. That's not including the four officers killed in the shooting in Lakewood.

Seattle Police Officer's Guild President Rich O'Neill says it's no wonder departments across the state are feeling the tension.

"At times you feel so vulnerable because you're being targeted because of the uniform you wear. You could be at a coffee shop or at a gas station filling up your patrol car. It's a frightening trend you cannot make sense of it," says O'Neill.

Governor Christine Gregoire says she's also concerned.

"I worry about our law enforcement knowing full well they are expected to put their life on the line, but not for an ambush of this nature," says Gregoire.

An ambush many say sends an unmistakable message to police everywhere.

"They have to be more alert and they have to not get complacent at any time," says O'Neill.

Governor Gregoire says she sent the Chief of the State Patrol John Batiste to help investigate the shooting in Lakewood, and that he will stay there as long as needed.
