SEATTLE—
Murder suspect Christopher J. Monfort is in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center. His condition has been upgraded from critical to serious condition. His mother has flown here from Alaska to try and be by her son's side. In the meantime, we're learning more about the man at the center of a massive investigation.
It seems, 41-year-old Christopher Monfort, spent much of his life trying to find "justice" - and a meaningful place in the world.
Q13 Fox News has learned Monfort grew up and graduated from high school in Denver, Colorado.
Then hopped states: from California, to Louisiana - working as a truck driver - before moving to Seattle.
In 2003: In his bid to be a student body senator at Highline Community College, Monfort said he was running to make the students "more aware of the liberties lost under the Bush Administration."
Monfort graduated from the University of Washington in March 2008. His major: "Law, Societies and Justice." He was also part of a scholarship program here which helped undergraduates prepare for advanced work.
In this picture, Monfort proudly displays his project, in part, titled: "the Power of Citizenship your Government Doesn't wants you to know about." It was part of the McNair Scholarship Program at UW. Former advisors called him a "natural leader."
But some neighbors called him withdrawn, reserved - and said he kept to himself.
Q13 Fox News reached family members in Colorado. They say they are shocked by the accusations against Monfort. They say they saw no warning signs - no clues that anything like this could ever happen.
They say he was never in trouble with the law. Court records show he had no felonies - only minor traffic infractions, but reports say Monfort did lose his job as a security guard recently. We don't know why.
It's one more clue, into the life of a man, now the prime suspect in a high-profile murder.
We talked with some of Monfort's college advisors over the phone. They say the university has barred them from talking to the media.
