SEATTLE—
Downtown Seattle got a little greener today.Several metered parking spots were turned into parks for a day.
Artists and activists set-up tents, brought in trees and grass and even played games including Tic-Tac-Toe.
It's part of an annual event. Organizers say the temporary parks help illustrate how land could be used differently if more people started walking, bicycling and riding the bus. Some of the groups involved in today's event include Cascade Bicycle Club, Cascade Land Conservancy, Transportation Choices Coalition, Zipcar and Feet First.
Amanda Mae helped set-up one of the temporary parks on University Street. She says, "There's no reason to drive a six person vehicle when you're driving yourself to work. So we're promoting bikes, walking."
But not everyone agrees with this event including some drivers trying to find parking. Sean Grauer found a parking spot but says, "I can see the message, but the problem I see is you also want people to come down here to work and spend money. Do you want the parks here or the money? And with the economic down-turn I'm sure all these shops would rather see paying customers."
There was also some confusion. One driver got a ticket for parking in a spot that had been reserved for one of the temporary parks in downtown Seattle.
