SEATTLE - A lit cigarette is to blame for a brush fire in the median of I-5 near Southcenter.

The fire block traffic in both directions of I-5 for miles.

At approximately 1:15p.m, Washington State Patrol Troopers, Department of Transportation's Incident Response Team, and the local fire department were forced to close down 4 of the 5 northbound lanes and all the southbound lanes of I-5 for an extended period of time while fire crews battled the blaze.

Officials remind drivers, during these record high temperatures and dry conditions, to keep all lit debris inside the vehicle.

Anyone who is caught throwing lit debris, to include cigarettes, from a vehicle is subject to a minimum $1,024 fine. King County Troopers would like anyone who witnesses cigarettes or any other lit debris exit a vehicle to please call the WSP at 425-401-7788 and provide the location, direction of travel, vehicle description, and license plate number.

Anyone who witnessed a lit cigarette exit a vehicle in the northbound lanes of I-5 at S. 200th St around 1:10pm is being asked to call the King County Fire and Arson Investigations Unit at 206-296-6670
