Fire Crews Battle Smoldering Wildfire In Skagit County
LAKE CAVANAUGH, SKAGIT COUNTY - Fire crews spent the day Sunday working on containing a wildfire in Skagit County.

The fire is burning near Cavanaugh Mountain, near Lake Cavanaugh, about ten miles southeast of Mt. Vernon on Department of Natural Resources land.

Two crews are working the lines around the fire and coming closer to containing it. The fire covers about 20 acres.

"We have two helicopters in the air with scoop buckets to attack the fire," said Jay Guthrie, spokesperson for Washington's Department of Natural Resources. "Two hand crews on the ground are working to contain the fire."

The firefighters also got a little help from Canadian crews. Two British Columbia-based air tankers dropped retardant on the fire zone.

No homes are currently threatened by the fire, and no one has been hurt. But homeowners in Lake Cavanaugh are keeping close watch, just in case.

This is one of four wildfires that were burning parts of Skagit County on Sunday. The Skagit Valley Herald reports one of the four fires will not be fought unless the flames threaten property or human lives.

Another fire, near North Bend, was also contained on Sunday morning by DNR crews. A ground crew headed out to an area near Mt. Si and the Little Si Natural Area -- a 28-acre swath of land just east of North Bend on the western boundary of Mount Si Natural Resources Conservation Area.

The National Weather Service warns that extremely dangerous fire conditions continue to persist in the area.
