SEATTLE -
Tens of thousands of people turn out for 4th of July celebrations at Gas Works Park. Organizers expected at least 50,000 people to show up at the event, and now traffic and parking becomes the big concern.
Police closed streets in the Wallingford area and began shutting down additional streets around 6 p.m. The area to avoid is bordered by Stone Way, North 40th Street and North Northlake Way. Officers will be stationed at checkpoints to stop anyone who does not live or work there from trying to get in.
The Department of Transportation will also close I-5 ramps during the fireworks display to prevent drivers from stopping on the freeway to watch the fireworks. At about 9:30 p.m., DOT crews will close the following:
- Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Roanoke Street - Southbound I-5 on-ramp from Boylston Street - Southbound I-5 exit-only lane to Mercer Street - Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Mercer Street.
Closures will be complete by 10 p.m. The ramps will reopen at the conclusion of the fireworks display.
