PIERCE COUNTY -
Pierce County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for the suspect or suspects responsible for a series of frightening home burglaries in the Mountain Park Neighborhood of South Hill.
Cops say six homes were burglarized in the early morning hours of May 30 and 31. The suspects entered the homes through open windows or unlocked doors while families were asleep inside.
Under the cover of darkness while the Leighton family slept intruders broke in and stole their money, laptop computers, and camera. Karie Leighton says the burglars also stole their feeling of security.
"To have someone do that to you it takes that sense of innocence away," said Leighton.
Cops say the crooks targeted homes around the South Hill area near Puyallup in the early overnight hours of Saturday and Sunday. They broke into Dave Klock's home through a back window.
"In our case, it was cash they got some money," said Klock.
A big concern for victims and law enforcement is a home owner stumbling upon the burglars in action. That thought crossed the mind of Chris Leighton.
"You get a little scared, my gosh these people were walking around in my house who knows if they were armed," said Leighton.
According to investigators the suspects have hit 6 homes in the Mountain Park Neighborhood. They're getting in through unlocked windows or doors. Detective Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff's Office says it's important to keep things locked up, especially during the night.
"It's obvious someone that took advantage of the weather and if they were successful at it, they'll probably continue to do it until they're caught," said Troyer.
Detectives are hoping someone saw the burglar's vehicle the night of the crimes and will provide clues in the cases. Crime is something Mountain Park neighbors say they've never really dealt with, but the rash of burglaries was the wake up call for Karie Leighton to put her family on high alert.
"To make sure and keep your windows and doors locked, you think you live in a very safe neighborhood, but, there are bad people out there," said Leighton.
Anyone with information about these crimes should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Your information could earn you a cash reward.
