Know Before You Go: Memorial Day Weekend Traffic & Gas Prices
SEATTLE - Gas prices, traffic and construction plans could turn your holiday weekend into a headache. The DOT is reminding drivers to be prepared for additional traffic -- Friday through Monday.

The good news is most construction projects won't be going on this weekend. The bad news is it will mean more cars on the road which leads to more traffic tie-ups.

SOUTH SOUND CONGESTION According to the DOT drivers along southbound I-5 near the Lewis/Thurston county line can expect to see the worst traffic backups Friday between noon and 9 p.m. Northbound drivers in the same area can expect congestion or stop and go traffic between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Saturday drivers will could see expected traffic delays southbound from 10 p.m. to 2 p.m near the Lewis/Thurston county line. Northbound drivers Saturday could see delays between noon and 2 p.m.

Monday I-5 southbound is only expected to backup for a short period of time, between 3 p.m. to 4 p.m near the Lewis/Thurston county line. Northbound drivers on Monday could see delays between 1 p.m. 8 p.m.

I-90 CONGESTION If you're heading to over the mountains you could also be in for a wait.

I-90 eastbound from North Bend to Cle Elum is expected to see the worst traffic delays Friday from 3 p.m.to 8 p.m.

Monday drivers heading back to Western Washington from the eastside along I-90 will see the biggest delays between noon and 9 p.m.

HWY 2 Monday drivers traveling between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass could be in for delays. The DOT expects traffic to pick up between those spots from noon to 4 p.m.

OTHER HOT SPOTS Heading over the mountains is always a traffic hot spot as is the drive from Bellingham to the Canadian border. The Hood Canal Bridge also remains closed - so plan accordingly. Ferries, trains, buses -- you name it -- expect delays there as well.

GAS PRICES If you're hitting the road Friday for the holiday weekend there's good news, gas prices are nearly a $1.40 less than last year.

The average price for a gallon of gas in our state is $2.58. It's a penny more in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area at $2.59. Drivers in Bellingham are spending $2.62 and in Tacoma gas will run you $2.56 a gallon.

Right now the national average of gas is $2.38/per gallon of unleaded. One year ago it was $3.83. The average in Washington is $2.58, one year ago it was $3.91.
