LAKEWOOD—
Lakewood police say a man was shot and killed by police Wednesday night when he came at officers with a weapon and refused to put it down. The fatal shooting took place at the Mount Tacoma Mobile Home Park on South 96th, just east of South Tacoma Way.
Officers say a call came into 911 dispatchers just after 8 pm about a physical domestic violence situation, where a drunken man was assaulting his wife.
Before officers arrived, the woman and an eight-year-old boy were able to escape from the home. As officers arrived, they say a man inside the home confronted them with a weapon.
They have not revealed what type of weapon the man had.
At least one officer fired at least one shot... possibly as many as four shots, killing the man.
The Pierce County medical examiner's office identified the dead man Thursday as 37-year-old Curtis Wetzel.
Lakewood Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Heidi Hoffman says officers were familiar with the man and had been to his mobile home at least once before.
One officer is on leave for the shooting investigation.
