SEATTLE—
It doesn't seem like it would be a big deal for Woodland Park Zoo to try and get one of its elephants pregnant. But this is no normal elephant.
"Chai" is the mother of "Hansa".
When the young elephant died four years ago from a rare virus it set off a firestorm of controversy over the zoo's breeding program.
Critics say if Chai gives birth again, another elephant could die in the same way.
The zoo says it's committed to trying to keep the endangered Asian elephant species alive.
We'll know in about four months whether Chai is pregnant again.
