SEATTLE -
There is a warning for homeowners in the Seattle area crooks have hit three houses all for one thing. They're not after your television or jewelry but for plants, trees and lawn furniture.
The crooks are targeting homes in North Seattle in the Crown Hill neighborhood, northwest of Green Lake. Three homes just within blocks of each other on 11th Avenue Northwest were hit recently.
Meghan Fuller's yard was one of the first to be hit. "The first hole I found was over here," said Fuller.
You can imagine her surprise when she noticed not one but two of her prized trees had been dug up by the conifer crooks.
"So, then I started to look around, cause I realized what happened, then I found this one had been stolen," said Fuller.
These plant thieves were brazen, they actually used a shovel they stole from a neighbor's yard to dig up Meghan's trees and left it there as a souvenir.
But, Meghan's yard was only the plant pilferers first stop. Next, was Heidi Allen's yard.
"There's not a lot of space I mean the bonsai was sitting there on the corner," said Allen.
The crooks took her bonsai tree and a shelf that was on the front porch.
"Some lowlife landscapers who will steal people's trees and then sell them to someone else," said Allen.
The midnight gardeners tore through the Crown Hill neighborhood a week ago. As a professional landscaper Meghan says she's seen this type of crime before.
"We've heard of it lots of times. I've talked to other designers who have had clients who've had lots of things stolen," said Fuller.
David Shuler was hoping to enjoy his yard from his patio. But, the bad guys took his furniture. They may have gotten away with more but Shuler thinks a backyard mess sent them running.
"Whoever was being the backyard burglar, hit 100 percent on poop three times in the backyard," said Shuler.
For Meghan she's bummed about losing her trees but knows it could have been worse.
"They're replaceable and their plants and no one got inside our house," said Fuller.
The neighbors say they are watching Craigslist like a hawk to see if the crooks are trying to peddle any of the stolen goods.
If you have any information about these tree and plant thefts call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. You could be eligible for a reward.
