PORTLAND—
The 45-year-old Seaview, Wash., man arrested for investigation in the shooting of a Washington State Patrol trooper in Long Beach has been ordered held on $5 million bail.Formal charges are expected later this week. Court papers filed Tuesday in Pacific County Superior Court in South Bend say Martin A. Jones is the husband of a woman whose van was being towed early Saturday after a drunken driving stop.
Court documents describe how Trooper Scott Johnson was at the scene to supervise the impounding of the van. A man walked up, spoke briefly to the tow truck driver, then walked away. The man returned and fired, hitting the trooper in the back of the head.
The probable cause statement says a police dog led detectives to Jones' house about a mile away. The statement adds that on Sunday, the trooper was able to help with a sketch of the shooter and later picked Jones out of a photo montage. Johnson was released Monday from a Portland hospital.
