Seattle - A bill is being considered in Washington State that would extend medical benefits for police officers injured on the job.

Jason McKissack is a former Seattle police officer who was seriously injured when he was attacked on patrol in June of 2008 in West Seattle. McKissack said, "The kid turned around and punched me three times. I had to try and reach down to try and help him."

McKissack suffered a traumatic brain injury and still gets terrible headaches and struggles with memory loss. He says he can hardly walk without a cane.

He says 18 months into his recovery, he received a letter from the Seattle Police Department notifying him he would be medically terminated from employment after 9 years of service.

After hearing what happened, Assistant Seattle Police Chief Nick Metz said, "It should not have happened that way. You don't separate someone from employment like that especially someone who has served with the kind of distinction Jason has and put his life on the line that night and many times prior to that. He deserved much, much better."

The bill is being considered as House Bill 1679.

There is a fund setup to help the family of Officer Jason McKissack:
